OSASUNA VS THE WORLD
By: Shane | March 14th, 2008
In football there are teams which are hated, stand up the Real Madrid and Manchester United’s of this world, and teams that you have a soft spot for such as the overachieving Villarreal or the loveable Aston Villa (sorry to Valencia and Birmingham fans in advance), and teams you really don’t give two monkeys about, yes Fulham we are looking at you,… or maybe not.
Sadly Osasuna fall into the hated category in La Liga as one of the most hated teams in Spain. But don’t start feeling for us just yet as we probably hate them back just as much. But before you judge, here are some of the reasons - apart from the fact that we hate them all just as much.
Osasuna play a very English style game, they tackle hard and at times could be described as somewhat dirty, on their day they can make Bolton look like Pele and the boys, and obviously this does not go down well in the skilful, faster pace,’ sissy’ world of La Liga.
Furthermore Osasuna has rivalries coming out of their ears. There is the Basque derby with big bullies Bilbao who always steal our good players. To be fair Bilbao have not much to choose from with their Basque player only policy as the only two decent teams are both now in second division (Alaves & Real Sociedad, of course}).
Then there are the regional derbys with the likes of Zaragoza, influenced by politics, regional diversity and hot headed fans. Then one of the biggest rivalries is when Real Madrid comes to town. The big shots from the capital with their never pleasant Ultra Sur fans. So much hatred exits towards Real Madrid that in the Reino de Navarra (Osasuna’s stadium) scarfs with the slogan “antimadrilistas” can be bought with ease. But more on this rivalry in later blogs.
Not all derbys though are political or regional. Some, believe it or not, do actually revolve around football itself such as the one with Sevilla. Where football scores are being settled season after season. Evoking passion between the two sides.
Not to be left out, most of la liga has a hatred towards my poor harmless Osasuna, they have even created a chant which goes like “todos a una…P**A osasuna” a bit like “all together now f**k osasuna”.
This weekend Osasuna did themselves no favours to regain popularity. Osasuna beat Almeria 2-1 at with goals from our new rising star Kike Sola and capitan Cruchaga. Osauna’s fourth home win in a row and moving 4 points clear of the drop zone. But the story which grabbed most of the media’s eyes was that Reyno de Navarra was the only stadium in la liga and second division not to hold a minute silence for the latest ETA victim ex-councilman Isais Carrasco, and that is hard to take. Mostly to avoid a reaction from the Ultra fans of osasuna INDAR GORRI.

Not to mention Sevilla now after the incident with your coach and my friend Jesus Alvarado.

Besides your Ultra’s, was there a legitimate reason for not holding a minutes silence? Most of the teams have dumb ultra’s that will chant hate speech and such, but all the stadiums had a moment of silence anyways.

Osasuna page? AWESOME!!! I actually found them one of the more exciting teams to watch during their 05/06 campaign, when they had Milosovic, Delporte, Webo and Raul Garcia. I hope you’ll keep us all updated on what’s happening with the team these days. Maybe you can explain to me what took them off the rails?
Anyhow, thanks for setting up an Osasuna page, honestly. But when it comes down to it… I still hate them. (no hard feelings)

And Osasuna’s failure to observe the minute of silence was especially conspicuous considering even Bilbao attempted one, though it was marred by the shouts of a small minority of the crowd.

The whole minute of silence was brushed under the carpet by the looks of it and no further comment was issued by Osasuna. And I suppose that was the mere reason they did not hold a minute silence, to avoid what happend in San Mames.
