La liga bad patch. Osasuna v Betis

By: Shane | March 21st, 2008

Spain is going through a rough patch. And I am not just saying this because of who they selected to represent them in the Eurovision contest
I am referring of course to La Liga. This year La Liga, which was last year described as the best league in the world, has been poor in and off the field. It was labelled a horrible season by the newly appointed Murcia coach Javier Clemente, and one would struggle to argue.
On the field Spanish teams have been pretty useless in Europe bar Barcelona, the only Spanish team represented in the quarter finals of the champion’s league compared to four English teams. And its not as if Barcelona would carry the flag for Spain, as you would struggle to find one in the new camp.
There domestic reason is also an absolute stinker. Real Madrid are leading the way with 7 points, but only because they are the best of a really bad bunch who cannot take advantage of Madrid’s slips (they have suffered 8 defeats in 2008 alone). But its not just the top two that have disappointed, Valencia are a mess internally and 26 points behind the leaders, while Zaragoza who were at the start of the year tipped for greatness are only avoiding relegation thanks to goal difference. Once good, Deportivo are probably now the most boring team in La Liga, and the likes of Villarreal and Atletico Madrid are terribly inconsistent.
This holy week where people in the south dress suspiciously like members of the kkk semana-santa.jpg, Other souther visitors slightly less scary but not by much are visiting Pamplona, Betis.
And this is where this eason begins to get ugly off the field. Betis are arriving in el Reyno after being handed a two match ban which sees the Sevillian club playng the next two home games in behind closed doors. The incident occurred during the Betis v Athletic Bilbao game 20 Mintues febore the final whistle with Athletic winning 1-2. Some idiot in the crowd decided it was a good idea to throw a bottle onto the pitch hitting the visiting goalkeeper in the face knocking him unconscious. The 3 points were awarded to the Basques and Betis might feel a bit hard done by as there was still a good 20 minutes to play and the visitors were down to 10 men. armando1.jpg
This is a most wing game for both clubs, and Osasuna must take full advantage of a distracted Betis.

Hopefully this season is just a blip for the wonderful Liga, and hopefully Osasuna reach salvation fast so we can start building for next years. As Osasuna are the largest suppliers to the Spanish under 21 squad called up for a friendly (Monreal, kike Sola, and Javi Garcia) which promises a good young talented squad for next year as long as the big clubs keep there grubby hands of them.

I really disagree with the ‘La Liga is sinking’ argument. (see two The Offside Podcast’s ago).

If you look at the two European competitions, 7 Spanish teams were in it. 6 out of the 7 finished in the top of their group stage (excluding Valencia, who are their own special case).

No other country can say the same thing.

Basically this argument is completely Barcelona and Madrid Centric. Once the big clubs cease to do anything, or have an off season, everyone complains and says that football is going south, etc.

So because Madrid sucked again in the Champions (like they have since they won it) and Sevilla were knocked out(in their first time ever in the tournament in which they beat Arsenal AND finished ahead of them in their group). Everyone goes bat-shit crazy.

Another thing, look at the parity in the league this season. 4 points separates 10th place from 18th place. The top three are still legitimately up for grabs and so is 4th-9th place.

I think people need to change their view on the league. When Madrid loses to Murcia at home, it’s not Madrid playing like shit and dropping points, it’s Murcia playing well and not getting steamrolled.

I’d rather see a league full of parity where every team can have a chance to win and not two teams dominating then seeing the same stupid big shots lift the title every season.

And Clemente just says these things to get a rise. He’s not in the limelight anymore since he got denied the Iran job, so he’s gotta get his name out there somehow.

AND Rodolfo Chikilicuatre, the Chiki, Chiki guy, is simply a legend. He’s finally the first one to realize that the Eurovision contest is so stupid and stuck up that he came up with that hideously great song. AND all of the other people that realize how terrible said competition is voted for that song.

He’s not any worse than the famous ‘posi’ jeje

AND you completely over-looked Getafe, who are still fighting strong for the UEFA cup (and Copa del Rey, for that matter). AND both Chelsea and Man U got knocked out of the FA cup, where 3 of the 4 teams that made it through to the semi-finals were from the B league. Nobody is crying out about the state of English football. English football is ’stronger than ever’ and the ‘best league in the world’ and NEVER HAD TO PLAY A SPANISH TEAM in the knockout stages of the CL. In the group stages England’s record against Spain was 2-1-1. (Chelsea 1-0-1 Valencia; Arsenal 1-1-0 Sevilla)

Sorry to rub it in, but I think this whole Spain is sinking (on the pitch) arguement is complete hogwash. I completely agree with Ryan’s points.

However, not the Spain as ever been especially well-behaved off the pitch, I agree with you, Shane, that off the pitch it’s been an ugly, ugly year. Coaches are getting fired left and right, teammates are punching each other in the locker rooms, players are taking their teams to court, not getting paid, being attacked by projectiles… Spain even stands to be eliminated from Euro 2008 due to dodgy dealings in the organization, and let’s not get started on the whole Aragones debacle. At least the fans aren’t attacking eachother in the stands and in front of the stadiums like in Italy and Argentina, but it doesn’t seem far away.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the murder of Isaías Carrasco you detailed in your blog. Ugly doensn’t even seem a fair word to describe that.

    John,

I felt my three previous posts were enough.jeje

But yeah, I made the same FA Cup argument on the Podcast a few weeks ago as well.

But yeah, off the pitch things are crazy go nuts. Seriously, fights, bottles, not getting paid, etc.

    Strange year

Dont all these things make for an interesting La Liga though? Its a stale and boring year if nothing is going on. Also, Shane, could you leave your email here so i could add you to the La Liga email list.

I don’t know, I could do with out the coach swapping, in-fighting and (non-play related) violence.
